 In light of the stagnant economy, fiscal problems are coming to the forefront. They consist of high state expenditure which is partially financed by indebtedness, but also of irrational utilization of loans taken, which are being used as a means for buying the social peace, instead for investments – for example, in infrastructure.

"When you're stuck in a hole, the first rule is to stop digging. We can't solve the climate crisis if we're still digging more and more coal, oil and gas out of the ground. It's time for regulators to take climate risk seriously and push fossil fuel companies to show how their business plans comply with the global goal of limiting warming to below 2°C. At the panel discussion "Media (un) freedom in South Eastern Europe" on July 9, 2015 journalists from Bulgaria, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia reported on the highly critical situation of the media system in their countries.

With some rare exceptions, the European Union has been absent from Serbian public discourse, and neither the media in Serbia nor the European Union are making efforts to change this situation. The Heinrich Böll Foundation's Talks on Europe series, organized in cooperation with the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, aims to restart debate on what Europe means to Serbia, and what Serbia means to Europe.

For a long time corruption in Serbia has been linked to patriotism. Today it is tackled in a very problematic “patriotic” way.
